About

IT WAS WRITTEN

It Was Written is a documentary film currently in production, that examines generations of Chicago writers/artists, and takes an in-depth look at how the subculture began and took root in the Windy City.

Our story focuses on the early 1990's, graffiti was under attack, and the youth had to evolve creating tactics to keep their subculture alive, in a city that was determined to eradicate this unique form of artistic expression.

Chicago became the first city to ban the sale of spray paint, adopting a no write policy, that came along with felony charges and an ultra effective new buff system that aimed to erase graffiti  within hours of being put up.

It Was Written's aim is to tell the story of this uniquely American cultural art form that sprung from Chicago's diverse neighborhoods across the city, and how it created a conversation on the meaning and definition of art itself.

“I was tunnel running in Chicago when I was 15  years old.  I was surfing the trains on Lake street when I was 16, hanging onto the outsides.

I was jumping off of train tracks, onto roof tops, then down to the street, I was 14 or 15 years old.

So I wasn’t afraid of nothing”
